Here are the graves of Sir Trafford Leigh Mallory, his wife, his closest staff and crew of Avro Lancaster 685 York that took him to India where he would take his next command. The plane had to follow a route from England and through Cherbourg, Toulouse, Corsica and Napoli. He turned away 45 miles to the east with unknown explanation and was caught in a storm of snow and ice and crashed into the tops of massive Belledonne (Isère). The villagers of Allemont Rivier, cloistered at home by the freak weather, heard the sound of aircraft engines, then a loud explosion and thought that all aircraft had slammed into the mountain opposite where the research was companies, in vain. Anyway, the wreckage and the bodies were quickly covered with snow. The discovery was in June 1945, six months later.
Sir Trafford Leigh Mallory (Air Chief Marshall) had the same level of command that Sir Bernard Shaw Montgomery (Ground Forces) or Sir Bertram Ramsey (Navy).
