William was the son of William and Ellen Amos of Sunnyside, The Vigo, Walsall Wood.
Prior to the war he was employed at the Walsall Wood Colliery.
William’s bn spent Monday 04/11/1918 in Villers Pol advancing the next day at 6am towards Amfroipret. The village was taken with comparative ease. In the afternoon the advance continued with a German stand being broken up by the use of tanks.
The next objective, Bermeries, was entered and positions past it consolidated. All the new positions gained were shelled and machine gunned by the Germans for the remainder of the day.
The War Diary records:
“4 November 1918 - 1st and 2nd Guards Brigades attacked at 5.30am. 3rd Guards Brigade was in divisional reserve. The battalion moved by companies at 200 yards intervals to Morte Farm and bivouacked in the orchards immediately east of it.
At 3pm we moved on to Villers Pol and were warned to be ready to move during the night. The CO and Company Commanders rode on to reconnoitre the road to La Buvette cross roads.
A conference of Commanding Officers was held at 6pm at Brigade HQ and orders issued for the attack tomorrow.
5-6 November 1918 - Battalion moved off from Villers Pol at 2.15am.”
