Major Gaston
Pierre Peter Kurten 24/04/1918 aged 29 Born in 1889, the son of R. Kurten, Beverley Lodge, 149 Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath. Educated at Whitgift Grammar School from 1898 to 1907 (played on XV and VIII and was a member of the Cadet Corps; Editor of the Magazine; Captain of the School) Received an Open Scholarship to Pembroke School, Oxford; BA with 1st Class Honours. 1st Class Honours from King’s College, London in 1911 Before the war he was Private Secretary to Sir Mathew Nathan, Under Secretary of State for Ireland. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, ASC in February, 1916 Transferred to the RGA in September 1916 Appointed as an Acting Captain in April 1917 and as an Acting Major in August 1917 Officer Commanding, 291st Siege Battery, RGA Fought as Messines, Ypres, Passchendaele and on the Somme. Killed by shell fire at Villers Bretonneux on the Somme on 24 April 1918 Twice mentioned in despatches His brigade commander wrote: “He was a born leader and organizer, and perfectly fearless in the execution of his duty.” ( Thanks to Dick Flory for the information) |

02/05/1918 aged 21 He was born in Gympie, Queensland, Australia, the son of Charles and Elizabeth Glasgow Stewart. His father, Charles Stewart, was a native of Granny, Kilcronaghan, Co. Derry, Ireland, who had emigrated to the Queensland gold fields in the 1860s. Jack's first cousin, Raymond J. Stewart (1893-1959), born, lived and died in NYC, served in France during WWI.
