Francis was co-pilot of Wellington IC R3157 AA-H who crashed near Kain.
The pilot, F/O JN Collins RNZAF was killed and have no known grave, he is commemorated on the Royal Air Forces Memorial at Runnymede, UK.
The others members of the crew, F/L L. P. R. Hockey, Sgts G. Thorpe and J. S. Brooks,were taken P.O.W.
