Lt Alan Lewis Pink 30/10/1918

For Avalon Eastman
Oundle School Roll of Honour
Pte Joseph Southall 05/11/1918
for his niece Sallyann Spittle and family
Pte Thomas Lingard 25/10/1918
A married man, Thomas was employed as a gig saddle tree riveter at Beebee and Beebee Limited, Wednesbury Road, Walsall, when he attested in the Army on Saturday 11/12/1915, then 26 years of age, being mobilised on Tuesday 11/04/1976.
He was drafted to France on Monday 28/08/1916.
On Tuesday 22/10/1918 his bn continued to advance against the Germans, crossing the river Escault near the village of Helchin.
The sheer volume of machine gun fire encountered forced the bn to retire across the river.
A pontoon bridge used for the crossing was later shelled and destroyed by the enemy and on being rebuilt “D” Coy was ordered to prepare to move forward.
At 2.50 am on Thursday 24/10/1918 “D” Coy crossed the river and established a small bridgehead.
Due to the volume of machine gun fire encountered no headway could be gained and a defensive flank was formed.
The bn remained in its positions during the following day.
for Graeme Clarke and the people of Walsall
