F/O James Ronald Gabert Sutton 23/07/1941 aged 21
Of Combe Martin in Devon, served with 611 (West Lancashire) Royal Auxiliary Air Force.
Of Manchester parents: James joined the RAF in early 1939 and was commissioned in the March.
In full-time service by 24th August: after completing his training, James rejoined 611 Squadron (“Beware Beware”) in 05/1940.
On 02/07/1940 , P/O Sutton shared in a Dornier 17.
His Castle-Bromwich-assembled Spitfire IIA ‘P7369’ crashed in a stall on landing at RAF Tern Hill fighter airfield (No.10 Flying Training School) Shropshire, on 28/09/1940.
The undercarriage collapsed and James suffered slight facial injuries.
His Spitfire Mk IIA was written off.
After a period of defensive duties on the east coast, 611 Squadron became active in May 1940 over Dunkirk and was based in Lincolnshire during the Battle of Britain.
P/O Sutton was promoted to the substantive war rank of Flying Officer on 02/10/1940 (Gazetted, in issue 1533; 14/03/1941).
James is officially a Battle of Britain Pilot: by flying at least one authorised operational sortie with an eligible unit of the Royal Air Force, or Fleet Air Arm, during the period from 0001 hours on 10/07 to 2359 hours 31/10/1940: James qualified (and he is officially recognised) as a Battle of Britain Pilot.
He received the Battle of Britain Clasp but he was killed in action on 23/07/1941 while on a “Circus Mission” over France.
James shared in destroying two more Do17's on 11/10/1940.
On 26/06/1941, Fg Off J R G Sutton recorded a BF109 Probable and one BF109 Damaged. On 09/07/1941, Fg Off J R G Sutton destroyed a BF109.
On 23/07/1941 – age 21 flying with 611 as a Flying Officer - Fg Off J R G Sutton was killed on his second offensive “Circus sweep” of the day, escorting Blenheim aircraft over enemy territory.
His Eastleigh-built Spitfire Vb ‘W3246’ (‘S’ for Stapleton) was shot down by a BF109 near Saint Pol, Pas de Calais.
He is recorded as “missing, escorting Blenheims to Lens”.
Listed on the Battle of Britain Roll of Honour: James is buried at St Pol Sur Ternoise British Cemetery (pictured on p.4).
J.R.G. Sutton was the last of 611 Squadron's pre-war auxiliary officers.
Flt Lt. Sutton flew in auspicious company: Spitfire Vb ‘W3246’ was also piloted regularly in that period by Hornchurch Wing Leader (former 611 Squadron CO) Wing Commander F.S. Stapleton DFC.
According to his citation in The London Gazette (4063) dated 15/07/1941: Wg Cdr Frederick S. Stapleton enthusiastically led his squadron on almost every operation over enemy territory, and helped to destroy twelve enemy aircraft.
Also in that period, the “inspirational” and renowned leading fighter pilot A/Wing Commander D.R.S. (Douglas) Bader DSO DFC led “consistently successful sorties over enemy territory”.
By 15/07/1941, A/Wg Cdr Bader had destroyed fifteen enemy aircraft and received the DSO (The London Gazette issue 4063 of July 1941).
