L/Cpl Eric Hughes 1914 - 29/05/1940 Son of Joseph Hughes and Bertha (nee Botts) from a small welsh town in Blaenau Ffestiniog, he was born in Lancashire, where his father worked in the coal mines. Eric served in both the 1st & 2nd Bn Welsh Guards, prior to his death in 1940. He was based in Wellington Barracks when he married Kathleen Spendley in 1937 at Caxton Hall, a stone throw away from the barracks. They had a daughter called Betty. Eric was a handsome chap, hard to imagine that even 4 years after his death his father Joseph & his mother Bertha clung to the hope he was still alive as a PoW, as a letter was sent by them to the War Office after hearing that a "Eric Hughes Welsh Guard" was a PoW. Eric served in the signals platoon, when he met his death. for his second cousin Tracy Evans

Eric is remembered at St Davids Parish Church Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales

And on the local town Memorial at Blaenau ffestiniog Memorial Hospital, designed by Sir Clough William-Ellis, former officer of the Welsh Guards who won the MC during WW1
