Thank you for keeping the names of the war dead at Terlincthun alive. Little is heard about this cemetery. My uncle, Michael Patrick Devlin, 2nd battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers is buried there. Died as a P.O.W. on 4th December 1918 which I find so poignant. He might have made it home. What happened to him, what he died from - wounds, disease, I don't know!!! He must have been on the Western Front. If anybody knows anything I'd like to know.

I was born in 1933 so I never knew Charles but in May's later years I looked after her and she often talked about him and how he had been killed on the Somme. As it is the 100th Anniversary of the start of the First World War tomorrow I would just like to say that he is not forgotten.

As the song goes 'when will we ever learn'.

in 1999 we found our granddad had a grave in Eustan Road cemetery Colin Camp.he died on the 1.7.1916.he left a wife & six children 3 boys & 3 girls,we organised a trip to visit the grave ,there were 5 going to start with but it ended with 10 going ,what a moving trip this was,to think he had been there all that time and we didn't know,five of us were his granddaughters & one great granddaughter the others were our husbands,we are all getting older so I don't think we will go again so god bless him CPR J Glynn. My husband and I plus our two boys visited the grave of Reginald A.Tillcock (died 28.6.17.) last weekend at Belgian Battery Corner - He was my Gt. Uncle. We left a poppy/cross -nothing could prepare us for the overwhelming feeling of being in a place where he and his comrades were buried. We also visited the Flanders Museum and the Menin Gate.

I visited my great uncles war grave in 1980 Lance corporal James Acton at Chercq Belgium but I have only read today the action that lead to his passing in 1940. As an ex serviceman myself I cannot comprehend the bravery of these men in this rear guard action to Dunkirk. Obviously I never knew him but I am now so proud to share his surname RIP James.

Pte 52372 H Binns, Kingsman of Liverpool was my maternal Great Grand-Father. My late Grandmother's only memory of her father was when she, along with her elder brother John and my Great Grandmother Mary, waved him off from Liverpool Lime St Station. She never knew where nor how he had fallen.
To "celebrate" my Grandmother's 75th birthday, we were able to locate his resting place via the Wargraves Commission and myself, my Mother and step-father took her to finally see her Dad's final resting place. It was the first time she had even left British shores.
We are now just one of millions of families who are custodians of memories so powerful and so all-consuming, having traced and visited long lost loved ones in this way.
To say it was over-whelming, to watch from a discreet distance as my 'Nan' produced a poppy from her pocket to place against his headstone, while talking softly and longingly to her Dad after all those years, is to hugely understate things.
Sadly, Nan had lost her elder brother in the 1970's, but I like to think that he looked upon us that day with the same mixture of sadness and pride that we shared.
My work has allowed me to visit the grave several times since, while driving around the French / Belgian border anf that the cemetary is so impeccably maintained is a testament to the gratitude still felt by local people.
I still do not know the circumstances of my Great Grand-Father's death. That he is remembered by a marked grave reassures me that, whatever the circumstances, he was recovered from the field of battle and buried with his comrades with the respect and dignity due to them all.
If anybody is able to provide any anecdotal or recorded history of the action seen around Bertrancourt in the Novemeber of 1916, I and my family would be eternally grateeful.

My daughter in law found my uncles grave at Le Grand Hasard Cemetery in Morbeque about 7yrs ago. My son took us to visit it and it was an emotional experience. Uncle Sid (sidney james dobson) was my late mothers brother and my grandma talked about him to us when we were kids and had a big photo of his grave on her wall. Then it was a wooden cross but now has a headstone. They would have been so proud finally a family member had visited. Oh that they had been able.to do it. We have just returned from a 5day coach trip to the Great War Cemeteries, a truly moving and humbling experience . Uncle Sid died 29th July 1917. May he rest in peace. Thanks for this website. My great grandfather mercantile Capt. George Webber is listed on the Beaumont Hamel monument, his schooner was sunk by the Germans in early 1915 in the Mediterranean. His son Hubert is also listed, died in 1918 in battle. My dad was named after his uncle Hubert.

Elijah Bithell buried in BLANDAIN Communal Cemetery was killed on May20th 1940. He was with the Royal Artillery and came from Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire . He was my mother's fiance and after his death she never went out until dragged out by her older sister in December 1944 when she met my father. They married after 3 months ( wartime) and I was born 12 months later! She never talked about Elijah and incredibly I went to school with her niece who innocently shocked me, ( we were both 10 years old) by saying that my mother was once engaged to her uncle. My mother's maiden name was Elsie Jeffries.

I have just discovered this site through a new and wonderful friend. He pointed out a post by Des Brady, where he says he has a WW1 medal that belonged to John Treacy. John Treacy was my great grandfather. If i can get in touch with Des Brady i would so appreciate that! God bless all those wonderful men who served our countries so valiantly.

After starting my family history, I have just discovered that my great grandfather fell on 18/08/16 at the Somme and is buried at Delville Wood Cemetary, Private Frederick William Ford, R.11811 of The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry - from Islington, widow-Edith Kate Ford. I never knew him or about him as my father was orphaned, I would love to find a photo of him or any of his family. Rest in god's loving arms. x

I went to school with is niece after the war.

Thank you for keeping a record of the dead from The Great War. William Reynolds would have been my Great Uncle. More importantly, he was my Grandmother's favourite big brother and I grew up hearing stories of his exploits before he joined up and went away to the war. I am coming to visit the battlefields and graveyards of the Somme next week and I will remember him.
