Years ago visited Vielle St Girons in Landes France and found a solitary Commonwealth War Grave. This was the grave of RAF Sergeant Herbert Carter. Looked so lonely, so we bought flowers and reflected on how he came to be there and hoped he wasn't forgotten. I've just found a photo of his grave on this website, and hope he will be commemorated along with those others who have lost their lives in conflicts. Well done.

Message for Brian Morgan on your post the other day re PTE Reginald Robert Kington who is buried in the Pigeon Ravine cemetery.
Brian, a relative of ours is also buried there- D.W.D.Hirst also Worcester Regiment. It is a very moving cemetery. Surronded by fields. Very lonely, few people visit it ( no more than one visit a year if I remember correctly ) and yet you feel the guys are ok there , together , in this compact cemetery. Bleak and yet so beautiful. Last time we visited , there was a copy of a photo and the last letter home from a 19 year old ( Alf Milligan) who is buried there too ( died 23rd Sept 1918)- very poignant. Look out for it , if you haven't been yet.
We are hoping to visit again soon and will look out for your relative's name.

Very interesting site. I have been researching my wife's family tree over the last year. Her father was born in England in 1904 and spent some infant years in Bermuda with his parents and siblings. This is where his brother, my wife's uncle, Louis William Morris enlisted with the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion. He eventually found himself in France and was Killed in Action, December 14, 1914, 1st battle of Passchendaele. He was 27 yrs. old and had only been in France for approximately one month.
He is buried in Bois Guillaume Cemetery I. A. 4A.
His Regimental No. is 10380.
If there is anyway I could view a photo of his grave monument, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jan from Canada,

Sorry it's been so long to reply. I haven't checked for ages. Not sure how to get in contact. There doesn't seem to be a 'reply' button. So here's my email in case;
rocketbunny ( at sign) outlook . com - I've included spaces incase it gets taken off. There is a 44 Squadron association that we go to each year. I beleive you can find the secretary's email via google. A nice chap called Henry has our details. There's lots to tell. Looking forward to being able to pass it on.

All the best
Rob
p.s. Their Lancaster was nick-named 'Kitty' !

My Uncle was Fred Salmon who was a crew mate of George Wilis. I would love to hear you

on 19/09/2013 at 17:59

Greetings and thank you very much or the good work and effort you have invested into this website and in memory of those who in all likelihood passed away with my uncle Frank Harrop, which I discovered this morning.

According to my father Albert Harrop (who was also in the Canadian Air Force) he was very close to Frank. I believe my father was located in South Wales serving in a medical hospital during the time of this tragic event.

If possible I would greatly appreciate a photo of his grave.

Thank you very much and regards.

Rob, saw your message about Fred Salmon. He is my uncle. I visited his grave in 2007 at Orleans. Please get in touch.Ken

After the untimely death of my beloved Gran, my Mum and I were going through her things and stumbed across a wedding certificate of my Gran marrying a man called John Jones. Total news to us both, my Mum and I set about learning more about the man who captured my Grans heart before she married my grandad. After almost two years of searching I found John. He was aboard HMS Lancastria and is buried in St Trojan de Bains graveyard on the Island of Oleron. Because of Churchills D notice, the disaster of Lancastria is only just coming to light. Pierre's website totally coincidentally carried a picture of John's grave. He has since very kindly added a photo of John. In August 2014, my husband, son and my Mum and Dad are travelling to John's grave to pay our respects. God rest all those who lost their lives in WW2, and in particular those who lost their fight aboard Lancastria. We will never forget.

Thank you for honouring the names of these brave young men who lost their lives in the collision of the 2 Halifax Bombers on 18/12/1944.
Sgt Esmond (Nick) Nicholson was my mothers brother in law(married to her sister Joan) I was always told he escaped the aircraft LV818 , but died from his burns in hospital which is why he was buried at a cemetery in Clichy.
I thank all those who's sacrifice has meant that I and my sons have never had to fight a European war to maintain our freedom.
May they rest in peace.

My uncle James Campbell, from Auchinleck,Ayrshire , died at the sinking of The Lancastria age 22.His brother John(my father),my daughter Johrene and I visited his grave in Pornic two years ago.It was an extremely poignant time especially for my father as he is 86years old and this had been his first ever visit to his brothers grave. My daughter, with today's technology, played the Last Post, said a beautiful speech with military salute, and laid a REME wreath, it was extremely moving. We would also like to thank the wonderful people of France for the part they played in the past, and for the way the graves have been so immaculately looked after and respected. We certainly will return someday, hopefully on the anniversary of the sinking of The Lancastria.Anne.

I went to Drosay with my husband to visit the grave of my uncle Norman who was shot down near there in 1944. we were helped greatly by Pierre and his friend Regis Biaux in finding out details of my uncle's last flight. During our brief visit, Regis took the time to come and meet us at Drosay churchyard and we had a good conversation.
It was good meeting you Regis and thanks again.

I was fifty years old before I discovered the grave of my father George Raglan Brown .Later on a visit to Durham Cathedral I also found that the date of his death coincided with my own birth date. At 73 it is unlikely that I will have the opportunity to revisit his grave. It is a comfort to know that these young men will not be forgotten.
Thank you for this memorial.

Hi, I would love to have the photo of Charles Dewsbury Cope that you have on the website for the Denain cemetary . He was my grandfather and as my father died when I was fairly young, am having difficulty in getting information on my grandparents.
