Following a visit to St.Souplet Cemetery, Nord, France recently by my son and grandson, I was wondering whether it would be possible to obtain a photo, etc., of the grave of my father's brother, Albert Laurance Fordham who died as a prisoner of war on 31 August 1918. Grave Ref I.F.28

My grandson is Head of History at his school, and believes that children need to have a knowledge of "modern" history including WW 1 & 2.

Many thanks

Hi Pierre - My name is David Shelton and I have in possession from my mother a letter sent to her mother from her brother Aubrey Hall, who served in the 14th Reg Worcester in WW1. He was killed in 1917 and after a search I believe his grave is the one in the Bailleul Rd East. His full name is Pte Aubrey Basil Hall no. 29765. I was wondering if you could send photo of his gravestone.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi, I have just returned from steenwerck communial cemetery where my father Harry Alfred Garner is burried. He was killed on the 27/may/1940 at dunkirk.Inever had the chance to know him as I was born 4 months after he was killed. It was so emotional to see his grave, he was only 21 years old. This was my first visit and I would never have found the cemetery without help, Iwent by train from lille to steenwerck and was completely lost when i arrived at the station. Thankfully I found a farmer who could not speak english but understood the word cemetery,he drove me around to three cemeteries until we eventually found my fathers grave. I will always be grateful to him. My father is burried alongside four other soldiers all aged between 20 and 23 I placed a red rose on each of the five graves.

Private 359370 William. George. Jones. of Birkenhead Died as a Prisoner of War. in the 10th Battalion Liverpool Scottish. Regiment. Could I please have a photograph of his grave as I am researching him at this time.
I have been to France and Belgium many times also to Crete, Rhodes and Malta. The CWGC cemeteries are always so smart and clean, although on Crete in the civilian cemetery they could not understand why someone what want to clean the military graves from the early 1900's and photograph them.
Cheers for now Peter.

Hello, I was so pleased to discover your web-site and to find that the picture of the Fleigneux cemetary features the grave of my grandfather R.A.Nason. To know that his last resting place is still being cared for is most comforting. I would be pleased to hear from relatives of the other airmen of DT-806 and wonder if any of the survivors are still with us today.

My Grandfather Arthur E Gerrard was killed at Messines Ridge (Mesen)in 1917. 93 years later I visited and spoke with him voicing my sorrow at his passing and also my pride in being his Grandson.

John Richard Hippisley was our Gt Uncle, from Bath Somerset. His service was due to finish five weeks before the outbreak of WW1, so he was required to remain with the Regiment. Originally entered at Rosenburg Wood.
From the personal diary of Lt G.A. Pridaux, who gave his life in 1917,
"It was very quiet early in the morning owing to the mist. We dug trenches from 7.00 to 9.00 am. At about 10.00 am the mist cleared and the Germans began to shell the wood in which we were lying. This continued all day with no loss except from their last shell which fell in one of our dug-outs, killing one man blowing both his arms off and a piece blew off one mans leg between the foot and the knee."

As a young boy of seven years of age I visited Wailly Orchard Cemetary near Arras. My father was stationed with the RCAF in Marville France and he took our family to Vimy Ridge then on to the cemetary at Wailley orchard where his brother, LeRoy Goodeill was buried. LeRoy died in 1917. Forty-eight years later my wife and I returned to France and visited the cemetary. My return visit to Vimy and the cemetary was a very moving experience. Sadly my father a WWII veteran passed away a few short months away from his 92 birthday in Aug. 2009. I have posted a picture of LeRoy Goodeill on the Canadian Government Memorial website.

Hello - I was surprised to see this picture of the Equevilly Commonwealth Gravesite. One of the air force personnel in this grave site is that of my Uncle John. I was born 4 months prior to the time he was shot down over France. I visited this site for the first time in August of this year. So I was quite surprised to see the photo on the internet. I have pictures of my uncle in uniform. How do I send to you?

Hi
My name is Richard Francis and i am the grandson of JJH Francis who served with 332nd Road Construction coy Royal Engineers. service number 228368.Killed in action 23rd October 1917.
He is buried at The Divisional collecting post cemetery ( sint Jan) (west Vlannderen)IB7.
Because of family age differences, family history has been lost but i was thrilled to find the information you have on this website.
I have since found about 15 documents in the national archives about some of his service, but none on events leading to how he was killed.
I do have a large family photograph of him in uniform with his family, taken before he left the country.
If you have a photo of the gravestone i would very much like a copy.
Many thanks for all your hard work
Richard Francis

Hi Pierre,
Thank you for this wonderful facility.
L/Cpl Robert Berriman 20/112 DLI died of wounds 21st July 1916and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Military Cemetery (VIII. A. 135.) in the same grave as two other fallen comrades. Using the “Find on this page” facility of my computer and your wonderful site, I have been able to identify the other two occupants (both Australians) of Roberts’s grave:-

Pte 993 MASON Edward Isaac AIF 21/07/1916 VIII. A. 135

Pte 3042 KINGSTON William AIF 22/07/1916 VIII. A. 135

L/Cpl 20/112 BERRIMAN Robert DLI 21/07/1916 VIII. A. 135

No other site would allow me to do this. I did try to trawl manually page by page on the CWGC monument details page but the data fizzled out after surnames beginning with the letter H.

Thank you very much – Barry Williams (researching Shotton Colliery Memorial UK)

Further re Canada's online only, interactive VIRTUAL WAR MEMORIAL maintained by Veterans Affairs.
Where the casualty of interest served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) re the Great War, you can see images of the attestation document of all who joined up at Library Archives Canada. This is invaluable where so many men and women were immigrants to this Dominion, showing place of birth and next of kin and personal data. Just google CEF ATTESTATION to get to the site at LAC.

What a wonderful web project. We are indebted to you for caring and sharing. Re Canadian war dead -
10 years ago Vets Affairs pulled out all the Canadian entries in the CWGC graves database and created our unique VIRTUAL WAR MEMORIAL of Canada.
The public is asked to submit JPEG Images that recapture the individual identities of our fallen back to Boer War and to Afghanistan today. Am sending in your group grave photo including Robert Murray IRWIN, noted in the Globe and Mail/Toronto death notice today re his brother, F. Ray Irwin. In time will copy to the others' VWM files. And in hope their kin will learn of our government project and of yours overseas - and add family civilian and military images if possible. Regards from Ontario, Canada
