It is so good to be able to see on records those who died in fighting for our country in the great war. my mothers two brothers were killed one went down on his ship in 1917 and George clarke in action, my gran and granfather and mother never knew where they were buried or not really how they met their deaths. But to see their names on records and that they are remebered with honouh is so satisying Chloe a neice of them

Well done on the web page. I have been working on the 173rd Siege Battery and two of the men who served with the Battery are buried here. If anyone is wondering about these men and the travels of this Battery I have a diary from my grandfather which covers most of a year between September 1916 and August 1917. My information is free and pretty comprehensive.

Following beginning familia history research I found that my grandfather Sgt Thomas Bishop was buried at Bienvillers having been killed on 9/9/1915. I managed to visit in March 2012 to lay a wreath and intend visiting again next month. The cemetary is small but beautifully tended. A credit to the CWGC.

I will be visiting my great grandfathers grave at Croix du Bac in April and wondered if it was okay to leave a memento. Perhaps a red poppy, or black fern or something stuck to the stone. He was John William McNamee

Sir
I am just writing to say how much I appreciated the picture of the memorial to Sergeant Douglas Jerome THOMAS and his fellow crew members on your web site. Sergeant THOMAS was my uncle whom I sadly never met due to his early death. His sister (my mother) Mary June Thomas (now ROGERS) is in her eighties and before it is too late I intend to take her this summer to see her brothers grave stone. My mother speaks of a very kind young man who took her to the cinemea on leave and taught her how to tell the time on his wrist watch!!!. It has given me great comfort to see the plot is well maintained and i will show my mother the lovely photograph on your site
Yours Sincerely
Martin ROGERS

Remembered with pride Lance Sergeant. Stanley Henry Dockley buried with an unknown soldier in the beautiful churchyard in Gavrus. Why?
We know his tank was attacked and he lay injured overnight in the fields near the river. We have no idea why he was buried in the churchyard while others lay in a communal burial site.
Thank you people of Gavrus for your care of our brother and uncles grave. My father Ed is now 92 and has such fond memories of his brother.
At his last visit ten years ago before dementia Ed recited from memory the 'remembrance prayer'.
Joan Stanley's wife is still alive living in Spain and Peter his son who never met his father resides in London.
Any memories of Stanley happily shared please.

Thanks for your efforts. My fathers crew are buried at St. Thegonnec. He was the only survivor and evaded. He and I visited the graves in 1994 and he was moved by the care that the graves had received from the local population. A monument was dedicated on January 23, 2013 70 years to the day they were shot down.

My father George haigh died 10 years ago he left a tin box which contained a tabaco pouch, inside this pouch I found a photograph of a soldier stood beside a lady seated on a chair. But even more interesting were the other items in this pouch.
Their were his regimental badges and other items which led me to the soldiers identity. The soldier was private C Dadswell 7375 of the 7th battalion of the royal Sussex regiment.
He died on the 23/03/1916 he now rests in the British cemetery at vermells France.
I would like to know how we are linked to this brave soldier and maybe share the secrets of this pouch. We would like to know more about those soldier to further our search god rest his sole. We will find the link that ties us together. I felt a deep sadness when I read his name as a fatality of that battle. RIP

My wife's great uncle William Toyne is buried in Hermanville Cemetery, one of only three Australians buried there. He was killed when his C-47 was shot down (possibly by friendly fire) at almost midnight on D-Day making him and his crew possibly the last casualties on that momentous day. We can't find any records to esablish whether it was friendly or enemy fire which got them but Squadron anectdotal evidence seems to suggest the former. Would anyone be able to shed any light on this story?

I am the granddaughter of Donald Hutt. He was the first Canadian casualty of the Second World War. My brother and i visited this cemetery in 1989 to pay our respects to the grandfather we never met. When we arrived in the town and asked directions, one of the townspeople said, "Ah qui. Le Seul Canadien!" and lead us right to the cemetery and to our grandfather's grave.

I am not sure if you can help me. I am researching the history of my great uncle Ernest Victor WILD who was killed on 19/7/1916 at the Battle of Fromelles. His service no was 4916 and he was in the 59th Infantry Battalion. As far as I know he has no grave and I was wondering if they are still doing DNA tests to identify the unknown soldiers from this battle. I would be eternally grateful if you could point me in the right direction as I would love for him to have a proper burial place.
