Frederick George Riddles.

He was part of the RASC. During the slaughter of soldiers on the beach his vehicle was converted into a ambulance and he rescued soldiers injured on the beach. He returned to rescue more men when his truck was hit and he was killed.

Son of Alfred and Ada Riddles; husband of Margaret May Riddles, of Bournemouth, Hampshire.

Fred Riddles wife (My great Auntie Peg (Margaret)) raised their two children in England: (Jean & Alexander) without their father. Alex later immigrated to Canada and then to the USA. Jean remained in England but her two children Linda and Edwin both became soldiers (USA).

Auntie Peg visited Canada many times to see her sister who immigrated from England with her husband after the war. (my grandmother) Isabelle (Belle), husband Art Shave.
Auntie Peg also visited her son/grandchildren/family in the USA and my grandmother in the winter months in Kissimmee, Florida. It was a hard life at that time raising their two children without a father but she always had a smile and a nice thing to say.

Frederick George Riddles: Always remembered

I have spent several years trying to find my Great Uncle, Private Fred Wilson, 203515 of the 1st battalion East Yorkshire Regiment last resting place. He died a POW but my grand parents never knew anymore than that. I never gave up and today of all days, 100 years since WW1 started, I found him, laid to rest in Hautmont Cemetary....if it is at all possible It would be lovely to receive a photograph. His grave number is IV.B.21... Both my great uncles died in the war, now I have found them both I hope to be the first family member to visit them and pay our deepest respects on behalf of all my family....

On this Veterans Day Remembrance 100 years following the beginning of WWI, I remember my father, James R. Stewart, USMC Air Corps, and veteran of the Pacific theater in WWII, my uncle, John F. Mackey, US Army, veteran of the Normandy invasion, my grandfather, Raymond J. Stewart, US Army veteran of WWI, injured in France and his 1st cousin, Samuel John (Jack) Stewart, Queensland, Australia, killed in France during WWI and buried at Camon. May they and all those who gave their lives in war be remebered and be at rest.

Walter Dobson, was my Great Uncle he had a brother Joseph he was killed on the 4th june 1914 at Ploogstreet serving with the Lincolnshire Reg No know grave.

I found my great great uncle's gravestone whilst on a battlefield visit with my secondary school approximately 8 years ago.

In memory of my uncle who never was, Arthur Garvin. His sister sent him a cake the week before he was killed and got a letter back saying how much he and his mates had enjoyed it. She's 91 in January.

Remembering my granddad Lance Corporal John Edward Shields who served with the 1st/8th Btn., Manchester Regiment. He was killed at the age of 25 on the 30/08/1918 and lies in the cemetery at Riencourt-les-Bapaume. He left his wife Agnes and 3 year old daughter Bertha Amelia. We are all very proud of what he and many others had to do in World War !!.

R.I.P Great uncle Gunner Hubert H Trott Royal Field Artillery from Resolven in Wales. Died 7.10.1918 buried in Quarry Cemetery (Marquion)(Pas de Calais France).

I never knew you but you are in my thoughts today.

anyone got any info about Ernest Hook G/18111 Royal Sussex regiment died 9th April 1917 - he was my Grandad's step-father. Ernest's wife died xmas day 1915 in Hastings. I have no photo's or other info - which I would like to have for my 75 yr old mum.

My Grandfather, Edward John James, died on 25 March 1918 and is buried in St Hilaire Cemetery, Frevent, Pas de Calais. We visit his grave whenever we pass through the area. British graves in the middle of the town cemetery - a lovely spot. Never forgotten.

I found my Great Great Grandfather on your website Corporal William Evans, I have only a photograph of him which Im happy to share….. he was a farrier in the Army Service Corps. He was 32 when he died leaving a wife and 3 children, the youngest my Grandfather.

He is buried at the Grevillers Cemetery in France.

Hi, Gunner FC Rust was my Grandads brother. I've known about Frederick all my life, but unfortunately my grandad passed away when I was one year old so never got to have any stories passed on to me. I have however got Fredericks medals and will be visiting his resting place one day with them hopefully. Unable to do so at the moment due to ill health.

We are interested in information regarding a relative of my wife Pvt. Francis Alfred Shortland 27578 7th (Service) Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment killed in action 21.11.17 and commemorated by grave V1.J.76. Would like to know which action resulted in his death and if it might be possible to obtain somehow a photo of his headstone as we are most unlikely to ever be able to get there ourselves Thank you for your excellent work.

Private Alfred Austrin 7667 1st Battalion Lincolshire Regiment was my great uncle (mother's uncle). Hoping to visit Spoilbank to pay my respects on 23rd May 2015, the 100th anniversary of his death (2nd battle of Ypres) aged 17 years.

Thanks to a programme on the TV, I have just discovered that my paternal grandfather, Ernest Dellar, is buried in Béthune, Pas de Calais. I never really thought about him before, but I now feel strangely moved. I intend to go and visit his grave. Strange how things happen.

I have recently visit Awoingt British cememtry and was very moved to see how well it was looked after, I was visiting the grave of thomas malham lance corporal killed in action 1918 RIP never forgotten.

Lance Corporal Ernest William Buckfield, Royal Engineers, serving with Inland Water Transport. Died 20th March 1919 on his way back home from Mesopotamia. He was taken off the boat in La Havre and died of malaria. He left a wife and four year old daughter in Sutton Surrey.
Sorry not to have a photograph of him. I seem to remember my grandmother had a picture of him on her wall taken while he was in hospital in La Havre with a feeding cup by his bedside. Sadly that photograph has disappeared. Would dearly love to see it again.
My family visited his grave a few years ago. We felt so moved and yet relieved to know he was buried in such a beautiful well kept place.
