This is truly a very very pretty well kept cemetry, i was fortunate to be able to visit my great uncles grave site private Albert Norris in September last year, sadly as the 1st of his relatives in 90 years to visit his grave. My mom has copies of letters he had written home which made the trip more surreal

My great uncle - Alfred Henry Griffin Middlesex Regiment killed 4 May 1917 - is here at Douai Communal Cemetery in Nord France. He was married with two little girls before he signed up, and he played the mandolin. But now the mandolin is silent, he has no living descendants and I cannot even find his service records on line. So thank you for this space to acknowledge his sacrifice. I plan to visit Douai in Sept 2011.

Through this website i was able to trace an ancestor of mine whom i knew was killed in action during the great war. His name was Joseph Hatton and was aged just 19. A shockingly young age to die in combat. He should have been out making merry and chasing girls at that age. We are planning to visit his grave this coming summer. As far as i am aware, nobody from the family has ever visited his grave and it close on 100 years since his passing. Thank you for you dedication in the upkeep of this website. Their name liveth forever more. Graham Hatton

I've been moved to tears some years ago when visiting the cemetery; I was only 17 years old and I realized someone, younger than me, gave his life for his Country.
As Italian I only regret in my country ones who died for Italy rarely or never recive the honour of the remembrance. This is sad. On the other and, as reenactor of the British Army, I always try to preserv remembrance of the fallen and teach this to my people.
I'll soon return to the Ranville Cemetery to present once again the arms to those brave boys.
"Their sacrifice will serve as example to others".

It is great to see from the messages that so many descendants of these brave young men care about the sacrifice that was made for freedom. My great uncle Oliver Stewart Lauder is amongst those commemorated at Messines. My father was named James Oliver as a tribute to his late uncle and the name is now passed on to his great grandson Max Oliver. We remember him with pride.

I am working on the genealogy of my extended family. One of the families is the Harp family from London, England. Today I found the burial site of my great uncle Henry Charles Harp who died in October 1917. He is intered in the Stone House Cemetery. I am going overseas in the fall of 2012. I plan to visit his grave site and that of two other relatives that were killed in WWI and are are intered in northern France. I must say that finding their location and some history of WWI has given me a new and much more personal perspective.

It's humbling to see the graves of our loved ones who fought to preserve the values that we hold dear in the United Kingdom. My relative Joseph Thomas Fuller was just a name on my family tree but this site has made him more real to me.

Many thanks for your efforts. I was able to view my father's grave (Flt. Sgt. F.A. Hayward) in Gambais churchyard. As I am unlikely to be able to visit in person, it was marevellous to see how beautifully it has been kept.

A remarkable site dear Pierre. I found it today by accident when looking for relative Private Frederick Jack Banfield, 21st London Regiment Surrey Rifles Reg No 2141, KIA 27 Dec 1915 in France. Was so moved to find Fred on your Casualty List & would be grateful for an image of his headstone if he has one at the Vermelles British Cemetery. Thank you for all the hard work you have put into this website. Silvia

My Uncle Dick (Nicholas) Pringle was the idle of his parents and younger siblings. It was a tragedy to loose him, being such a special person to everyone who met him. My Mum is his only subling left. She is 83 and he would have turned 100 this month, Dec. She tells me about her life with her family and I feel as though I know him. Thank you Pierre.

Pierre, your time and effort in producing this memorial website is very much appreciated by those of us who have lost family members serving during the world wars. I was pleasantly surprised to come across your site while searching for my uncle (Royal Winnipeg Rifles) who was killed on D-Day+2 and to find him listed in your database. Adding photos I've provided has made it even better. The amount of work and compassion you have put into this project is obvious. On behalf of my family, thank you.

Dear Pierre,
Thank you for placing a photo of my great uncle Cpl Brooks MM grave at Kallo on your web site.
You may be aware that Cpl Brooks was captured by the Nazis prior to the Arnhem offensive, tortured then publicly executed by hanging out side Kallo Town Hall in 1944.
Cpl Brooks was cut off from his fellow soldiers, and then joined forces with the local Belgian resistance. He is also remembered outside the town hall with the brave Belgian resistance fighters.
On behalf of his family, thank you.

Reginald Alexander Tillcock (my Grandfather's brother) is buried at Belgian Battery Corner. His brother Richard Bernard Tillcock came home injured with a nasty gutter fracture to his forehead and trench foot. Via the Commonwealth War Graves Commission I learned that Reginald had a Gravestone but so far have not been able to visit. I am hoping to do so very soon. I have various photos of the Cem. even an old photo of the cottage hospital that stood on this site.

Beste
Alvast bedankt!
Vriendelijke groeten,
Luna

In loving memory of Gunner Thomas Crawford Robson, C Battery, 210 Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, killed in action on 4 November 1918 and buried at Capelle-Beaudignes Cemetery Nord-France. Father of Philip Crawford Robson, and grandfather of Linda Crawford Robson (now Lee). The fact that you were killed only 7 days before Armistice and left a widow and your baby son (Philip) makes your death even more tragic. You are not forgotten, Tom, and your son Philip went on to become a full-time soldier for 22 years in REME and to serve with distinction in World War II. You would have been very proud of him. Rest in peace at Capelle-Beaudignes with your other colleagues in C battery 210 Brigade Royal Field Artillery killed on the same day.

FEATHERSTONE My cousin & I visited the grave of our gt uncle Gunner Oscar Featherstone died 05/09/1915 in July this year. It was the first visit by any relative to his grave in 95 yrs and so was very emotional. We also visited the Menin Gate to view Norman Featherstone his brothers listing and stayed for the Last Post which was amazing. Oscar 's headstone is abutted by two other Gunners, G Denton and W Ferguson both died 05/09/1915 There was obviously an incident for them all to die on the same day and to be buried alongside each other Does anyone have any information on this? Well done to this site, may we never forget the sacrifice they and their families made for us.
