my uncle William Francis Walton was buried at Namps Au Val after passing away from wounds received at Villers Brettoneux on April 13th 1918. He was the editor of the Emmaville Argus newspaper and also ran the "Cooee" newspaper on the troop ship "Suevic" during his November 1916 voyage to Britain. I had the honour of visiting his grave in 2005 and shall never forget the experience.

I am eternally grateful to Pierre For sending me a picture of my Great Grandfathers Grave from Maing Communal Cemetery. He was Private S42221 of the Seaforth highlanders. I lead a group to the Battlefields in July 2014. We led a wreath to a relative buried at Pouchvilliers Cemetery. We were all deeply moved when we discovered in the Registry Box a photo of a soldier buried there and a letter dated May 2013 from his family telling him of his family history. The letter tells that his sister was 102 and still alive and had 10 children. I regret not taking full details of the soldier and letter. Can anyone assist as i refer to them when i do talks on behalf of the Somme Museum Northern Ireland They underline the continuing emotional impact of WW1

100yrs to the day the 20th October 1914 my hero Grandad Private James Gemmell 9050 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers lost his life at Le Touquet.He was buried in the Field Cemetery at Le Touquet Railway Crossing now known as the (Railway Crossing Cemetery ) After the War his remain's were never found due to his grave being lost by shelling in the area and he is Remembered with Honour on the Ploegsteert War Memorial for the missing. His name is not mentioned anywhere at the Railway Crossing Cemetery and i hope that a Memorial Plaque of some kind will be placed at the Cemetery by the CWGC. On July 18th 1944, allied forces, of the Royal Air Force, 619th Battalion departed Dunholme Lodge airfield near Lincoln, England on a bombing mission to Revigny, France. The crew on Lancaster bomber # PB-245 consisted of 4 officers of the Royal Air Force, 2 officers from the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the lone Royal Canadian Air Force officer, James Kitchener Johnson.

Pilot Officer/Navigator Jimmy Johnson, was 26 years old, and the youngest child of William and Annie Johnson of Kirkland Lake Ontario, when his Royal Air Force bomber was shot down by a German BF 110 G-4 “Night Fighter”. Jimmy was on his 25th bombing mission.

As the plane tumbled to the earth in the countryside near the pastoral setting of Ussy-sur-Marne, France the tail section of the plane, broke off and fell into a farmer’s field. The body of the plane continued on and crashed in the foothills just outside the village that straddles the Marne River some 70 kilometers from Paris. The plane exploded on impact and burst into flames incinerating the six members of the crew including Jimmy Johnson. The tail-gunner section of the plane was later found some 500 meters from the crash site, with the tail gunner still strapped to his flight seat.

The following day, under the watchful eyes of the occupying Nazi forces, the villagers held a funeral service and buried the gunner in the village commune ironically at the bottom of the hill where the plane crashed.

Eventually the community erected a tombstone that reads "Aux Sept Aviateurs Anglais - enterrés ici ou dans les environs" (To the Seven English Aviators-buried here or in the surrounding countryside).

Two Ussy-sur-Marne villagers, brothers Jean and René Guyon, were in their early twenties in 1944 and witnessed the Lancaster aircraft, as it fell from the sky. They managed to salvage the wheel from the tail-gunner's section of the plane and kept it in their family barn, 10 kilometers outside the village, where it stayed for over 60 years.

When Johnson family relatives visited the grave site in 2002, Ussy-sur-Marne townspeople, directed them to the farm of René Guyon where Rene now being in his eighties, donated the “wheel” to the family and it is retained in the Johnson.

Air Canada was approached and asked to ship the wheel to Canada, and they said that they would but at a very hefty price. Air France was approached and their spokesperson said, “Of Course, No Charge, its part of the debt that France owes Canada.”

Thank you very much for creating this page. I am great nephew of Frank Alan Wells. I supplied the photo of Frank to the Proville Marie or J C Defer and attended Proville in 2003. My dad's cousin has just visited Cambrai this year, but did not realise the whereabouts of the bombers monument in the woods at Proville.

I am so grateful to Chris for his note on Tower of London Roll of Honour for those who were killed in action. Lance Corporal William Bamber 26289 will be one of the 180 who will have their name read out on 26 September 2014. He was in the Kings Own (Liverpool) 11th Batallion. I believe they were called Pathfinders. He was KIA on 21 March 1918 just near San Quentin. With the shortage of recruits, I am told, the pathfinders were deployed to the front line trenches. My brother and me would love to see a photo of him.

In memory of my Godmother's brother, a Cousin on my father's mother's side, Private John William Canning, 45586, who died on 6th July, 1918, having been wounded about a day earlier. He was in the 15th Bn, Hampshire Regiment (having been transferred from the Warwickshires). He is buried at Lijssenthoek and someone has recently put poppies on his grave. It is very moving to see his picture on the home page of the Lijssenthoek cemetery. My Godmother missed her brother greatly. R.I.P.

2 of my grandfather's brothers, Arthur William Adair McCarter and Ronald George Adair McCarter were killed in WW1 , Arthur is buried at Warlencourt British cemetery and Ronald at Beaurevoir communal cemetery. I will be visiting them both in june 2015. I expect this will be very emotional, although I never knew them.

On 29/08/2014 I was privileged to visit the grave of my grandfather, LAURENCE EDWARD THOMPSON, Driver 780844 - The Royal Field Artillery, who was killed in action on 01/03/1917, age 23, and is buried in Engelbelmer Extension Cemetery, France.

The inscription on his grave:

About 51 years ago when I was 11 my gran told me once that her brother was missing presumed killed in action in ww1 , I sorry to say I am unable to remember his firdt name only his surname which was Risdale . My late gran Hilda was born in 1902 her late sister Florrie about 1900, so no doubt their brother was older than them to have served in the ww1, they were from Leeds west yorkshire England, when my gran was alive and I was a schoolgirl we would always have a 1 minute silence on the 11th hour of the 11th month in his memory ,just wish I could know more than his surname !

This is an information posting. Anyone who has a family member who died in WW1 please go to the Tower of London website and nominate them to be included in the nightly Roll of Honour (180 names read out each night at the Tower). It will continue until 11th November 2014. I nominated my 2 great uncles (Johnny Lyons and Harry Whittington) and was successful with both (their names being included on 9th and 11th of August 2014 respectively).

Visited this cemetery just two weeks ago to see the grave of my uncle, John Brick. He has been there for 96 years and to my knowledge, I am the first one of my family to visit. It was a very moving experience. It was lovely to see how well the cemetery is looked after and what a peaceful spot it is - not unlike home.

With the 100 year anniversary of WW1 just, I looked up if any 'Hopcutt' died in that war and found two, both brothers, from Wombourne, Staffordshire. As this was the brithplace of my parents (in 1909 & 1917) I was amazed that I was told/knew nothing about them, ergo my relationship to them...there are not that many 'hopcutt's around. I hope to learn more.

(Infantry) I did not know.Wounded in France and returned to UK for hospital treatment; after which he asked to rejoin his colleagues back in France. He continued the fight, losing his life on 4th. October 1918. He left a widow, Mary and 3 sons; John, H., Kenneth and Ronald. In this year 2014, when we commemorate the outbreak of WW1, it is fitting that I leave this to the memory of this brave man and those who also lost their lives fighting for the freedom we all have today.
